The Nadar's moved into this new flat on the seventh floor just fourteen days before this picture was taken. The slum development authority have a system in place that means that developers can build new flats for wealthy Mumbaikers on Dharavi land but must in turn build flats for the slum residents. They hope to house 52,000 Dharavi families over the next few years by using this system. Opponents of such a policy say in reality only a few slum families will benefit, the rest will be evicted..Mr Nadar, a driver, who has lived in Dharavi for the 25 yrs since he came from Madras as a 9 yr old, is overjoyed by the new home. Its is double the space at 225 square feet and they have running water and a lavatory. He says, " before this we lived next to the gutter, now its all so clean, the children are very happy."
